The Grand Ole Opry, long celebrated as “The Show That Made Country Music Famous,” is also known for spotlighting comedy alongside its legendary music acts. From Uncle Dave Macon’s vaudeville charm in 1925 to Minnie Pearl’s unforgettable debut in 1940, laughter has always echoed on the Opry stage.

Now, for the first time in nearly five decades, two comedians have been invited to join the prestigious Opry family. On January 6, 2023, during a backstage Facebook Live event, Opry star Marty Stuart surprised veteran funnymen Henry Cho and Gary Mule Deer with the ultimate honor—an invitation to become official Grand Ole Opry members.

A Historic Comedy Induction

The last comedian to receive this recognition was Jerry Clower in 1974. With Cho and Mule Deer’s induction, the Opry is reviving a rich tradition of humor that has always been part of its DNA. Both comedians have graced the Opry stage over 100 times each, earning loyal fans with their timeless, family-friendly comedy.
