Nashville, TN – September 18, 2025 – Country music lost one of its greatest talents on Thursday when Brett James, the prolific Nashville songwriter behind iconic hits like Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” tragically died in a plane crash near Franklin, North Carolina. He was 57. Tragically, his wife, Melody Carole Wilson, and her daughter, Meryl Maxwell Wilson, were also on board and did not survive. The crash occurred just west of Iotla Valley Elementary School, sparing the children inside but leaving a gaping hole in the country music community.

Brett James was far more than a songwriter; he was a force that shaped modern country music. Over his remarkable career, he penned more than 800 songs, achieving over 25 No. 1 hits that defined the genre. Beyond country, his songwriting reached artists like Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson, Kid Rock, and the Backstreet Boys, proving his versatility and timeless talent.

Carrie Underwood paid heartfelt tribute, remembering James as “a good man” whose songwriting catapulted her from American Idol to country stardom. “His death leaves a hole in all of us that I fear won’t ever go away,” she shared. Likewise, Jason Aldean honored James during a recent concert, dedicating a performance to the late songwriter.

Born in Missouri, Brett initially pursued medicine, attending med school before realizing his true calling was in music. By 1995, he secured a record deal with Arista’s Career Records, releasing a solo album. But it was in the songwriting room that his legacy was truly forged. Artists like Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Dierks Bentley, Tim McGraw, Luke Bryan, and more brought his words to life, filling arenas with stories of love, heartbreak, and hope.

James also championed fellow songwriters, serving on boards of the CMA, the Recording Academy, and NSAI, and founding Cornman Music to support emerging talent. His influence even touched the early career of Taylor Swift, demonstrating his eye for potential and passion for nurturing artistry.

Though he often remained behind the scenes, his songs were anthems for millions, resonating deeply with fans. Hits like “Jesus, Take the Wheel”, “The Truth”, and “I Hold On” became cultural touchstones, proving that Brett James’ impact was immeasurable.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash, but Brett James’ musical legacy requires no investigation—it is etched in the hearts of fans and artists alike. He reminded the world that songwriters are not merely background voices; they are the soul, muscle, and fire of music.

Brett James is gone, but his songs—and the emotions they evoke—will live forever.
